The Leafs and Coyotes have completed a multi-asset trade, with Toronto moving veteran forward Ryan Nugent-Hopkins in exchange for two selections in the upcoming draft and an additional second-round pick in 2027.
The deal gives the Coyotes an established NHL scorer for the upcoming season, while the Leafs continue reshaping their roster and replenishing the draft capital used in their recent acquisition of Jason Robertson.
Trade Breakdown

- 28th Overall Pick
- 40th Overall Pick
- 2027 Second-Round Pick
Coyotes Receive
- Ryan Nugent-Hopkins
- Future Considerations - Player to be dropped by August 1, 2027
- 2027 Third-Round Pick
Leafs Turn a Veteran Into Draft Capital
For the Leafs, this is a very different type of transaction from their blockbuster acquisition of Jason Robertson.
Rather than using draft capital to add established production, Toronto is now moving in the opposite direction by converting a veteran roster asset into three draft selections.
Nugent-Hopkins remains a productive NHL forward. The 33-year-old scored 20 goals in 72 games last season and continues to benefit from a prominent role within Edmonton's high-powered offence.
But from a long-term Lifetimepool perspective, age matters.
Toronto has moved a player entering the later stages of his career and received the 28th and 40th overall selections immediately, along with a second-round pick in 2027.
The Leafs do send a 2027 third-round pick back to the Coyotes and assume an additional future-considerations obligation, but the important part of the transaction is the upgrade in future draft capital.
Ryan Nugent-Hopkins + 2027 3rd + Future Considerations → #28 + #40 + 2027 2nd
Two More Picks for the 2026 Draft
Picks #28 and #40 give the Leafs two additional opportunities in the upcoming draft.
In Lifetimepool's 12-team draft structure, the 28th overall selection falls in the third round, while the 40th overall selection lands early in the fourth round.
That gives Toronto considerably more flexibility.
The Leafs can use the selections to replenish the prospect pipeline, target younger NHL players who have fallen into the draft pool, or potentially use the picks as trade assets in another deal.
The additional 2027 second-round pick may ultimately be the most important asset in the package. Toronto upgrades its future position by sending a third-round selection while receiving a second-rounder in return.
Coyotes Add Proven Production
For the Coyotes, the attraction is immediate production.
Nugent-Hopkins gives the club an established veteran capable of contributing immediately. He has surpassed 1,000 NHL games, has previously produced a 104-point season and remains positioned alongside some of the NHL's most productive offensive players in Edmonton.
The Coyotes are effectively using draft capital to acquire a player whose production is already known rather than waiting for multiple draft selections to develop.
They also receive Toronto's 2027 third-round selection and future considerations requiring the Leafs to make an additional player drop by August 1, 2027.
That additional component gives the Coyotes another opportunity to extract value from the transaction beyond Nugent-Hopkins himself.
A Bigger Offseason Strategy Emerging in Toronto
Viewed on its own, this is a veteran-for-futures transaction.
Viewed alongside Toronto's other offseason moves, however, a broader strategy is beginning to emerge.
The Leafs recently converted picks #49 and #54 into the 37th overall selection, and then used that pick with $425 cash to acquire Jason Robertson.
Toronto has now followed that acquisition by moving Nugent-Hopkins and bringing #28, #40 and another 2027 second-round selection into the organization.
In other words, the Leafs have managed to add a 27-year-old elite scorer in Robertson while simultaneously restoring a significant portion of their draft inventory through a separate veteran trade.
It is a balancing act between competing now and protecting the future.
The defending champions are clearly willing to move assets aggressively, but the Nugent-Hopkins trade ensures that Toronto is not simply emptying the cupboard in pursuit of another championship.
The Leafs added star power with Robertson. Now they have added back draft capital. The offseason rebuild around the defending champions continues.
