The Leafs and Oilers have completed a draft-pick trade ahead of the 2026-2027 Lifetimepool Draft, with both franchises using the deal to address very different roster priorities.
Leafs receive:
- 37th Overall Pick, 4th Round
Oilers receive:
- 49th Overall Pick, 5th Round
- 54th Overall Pick, 5th Round
For the Leafs, the deal is about consolidation and roster retention.
Steve moves two fifth-round selections for the 37th overall pick, moving significantly higher in the draft while also reducing the Leafs' total number of selections by one.
Because Lifetimepool requires a player drop for every draft pick owned, the Leafs will now have one fewer mandatory drop heading into the new season.
Instead of carrying five selections, the Leafs will now enter the draft with four picks, allowing the franchise to retain one additional player from its current roster while upgrading one of its draft positions.
For the Oilers, the objective is different.
Joey gives up the 37th overall selection but adds both the 49th and 54th overall picks, increasing the Oilers' total number of draft selections from five to six.
That means one additional player must be dropped, but it also gives the Oilers another opportunity to reshape the roster.
For a franchise looking to create more room for younger players, prospects and potential breakout candidates, the additional selection provides another chance to find long-term value.
